Hans Holbein Der Jungere (Masters of German Art)
The study of Holbein's work is a field in itself and there is actually a book listing such studies which runs to 700+ pages. This is not that book. This is an excellent introduction to the artist and his work, an area in which the non-scholarly reader has of late been very badly served. Of those books purporting to be a general introduction currently available, many have been around for years, contain the bare minimum of illustration and text required to constitute a book, and are consequently inherently unable to present a balanced overview. Stephanie Buck's book should consign those to the trashcan and the remainder box. It combines wide-ranging and discursive text with the most important requirement of such a book, profuse colour illustration.
